Sixteen

Nahum turned over another fallen enemy that he’d found halfway in the hedge, finding her throat cut. One of Shadow’s kills. Nahum sighed as he thought of his own victims. He hadn’t killed so many people in years, and he knew he’d have to kill more before this was over.

Ash must have heard him, because he called over, “Weary, brother?”

“Weary of killing. Black Cronos is like a small army.”

“A well-equipped and well-trained army. It doesn’t feel like a group of alchemists to me.”

“No, they don’t,” Nahum agreed. He rolled his shoulders, feeling the deep ache in his muscles, and winced. “I think I’m covered in bruises.”

“At least we’re not dead.”

It was the early hours of the morning, and Nahum and Ash had been working their way steadily along the farthest field from their house, while Barak and Shadow concentrated on the other direction. Eli and Gabe were in the house, trying to reassure Caldwell and Aubrey. They were, understandably, terrified. Nahum and Ash had flown back and forth in pairs, refusing to leave each other alone.

The moon was riding high now, throwing its silvery light across the fields, and the long grass around them swayed in a gentle breeze that blew in from the sea. The light also, unfortunately, highlighted the dark pools of thick, congealed blood splattered across the fallen.

“We must have faced almost two dozen, by my reckoning,” Nahum said, running through the numbers. “That’s a lot of people.”

“And still that woman escaped.” Ash chewed at his lower lip. “I’d love to know what it is she does.”

“Her manner of killing, you mean? Yes, me too.”

Ash made slow progress as he searched the boundary where the shadows were darkest. “I suspect their tattoos have been magically enhanced with some kind of ritual. Maybe they came out of an alchemical breakthrough?”

“Or it’s just plain old magic. The witches have magically enhanced tattoos.”

“How do you know that?”

“El told me a few months ago.”

“But I bet theirs don’t disappear after death,” Ash pointed out. He grunted as he pulled another man from the hedge and slung him over his shoulder. “Surely we’re nearly done now. I need a shower.”

“Just that corner left,” Nahum said, pointing over his shoulder. He hauled the dead woman up, wondering how she had become embroiled in Black Cronos. “Come on, let’s gets rid of these two and finish up. I stink of death.”
